New Delhi, September 11, 2024 — The Congress party has sharply countered allegations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing Rahul Gandhi of making “anti-national statements” and criticized him for meeting with US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar during his visit to the United States.
Congress Defends Gandhi’s Constitutional Advocacy
The Congress party has defended Rahul Gandhi’s statements regarding reservation policies, arguing that his comments were focused on upholding the Indian Constitution. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera responded to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s criticism by questioning why discussions about constitutional values are met with hostility from the ruling party. “We are talking about upholding the Constitution of India. How is that anti-national? The BJP’s repeated objections to such discussions reflect their disregard for constitutional principles,” Khera stated.
BJP’s Criticism of Gandhi’s US Visit
The BJP has also criticized Gandhi for his interactions with US lawmaker Ilhan Omar and other Congress members, alleging that these meetings indicate support for divisive agendas. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Gandhi of trying to rally support abroad for controversial causes related to Khalistan and Kashmir. Dubey’s remarks were based on Omar’s previous support for positions that are seen as controversial in India.
Congress Challenges BJP’s Allegations
In response to these criticisms, Khera challenged the BJP to take formal action if they are genuinely concerned about Gandhi’s activities. “If the BJP is truly concerned about Rahul Gandhi meeting US Congress members, they should urge the government to address their concerns with the US State Department or summon the US ambassador,” Khera said. He criticized the BJP for not taking any concrete steps and suggested that their focus should be on addressing their own internal issues.
Gandhi’s US Visit
Rahul Gandhi is on a four-day visit to the United States, which began in Dallas and continued through Washington DC. The visit has been marked by political controversy and debate, with Gandhi’s meetings with US lawmakers drawing significant attention from Indian political leaders.
The Congress party’s defense of Gandhi highlights the ongoing tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition, reflecting broader political dynamics in India.
