Joint Efforts Crucial for Tourism Revival in Gulmarg

Gulmarg, Sep 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has publicly expressed his disappointment with tourism stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir. At a recent meeting, he outlined the urgent need for collaboration to revive the region’s struggling tourism industry.

Why Joint Efforts Matter for Tourism

During a closed-door meeting held at the newly inaugurated Gulmarg Convention Centre, Abdullah called out industry players for not supporting his government’s efforts. He criticized them for their silence during political attacks on tourism policies.

Key Initiatives Under Abdullah’s Administration

Abdullah, who also oversees the tourism portfolio, highlighted various initiatives aimed at boosting tourism, including a new cycling festival in Pahalgam and enhanced promotional efforts following a tragic terror attack in April that impacted 26 tourists. He lamented feeling abandoned by those he believed should have defended these efforts.

“The economy of our region relies heavily on tourism, and without active support from both public and private stakeholders, we cannot regain our vibrancy,” Abdullah stated, emphasizing the critical role of collaboration.

Lease Agreements Under Review

In a move that could shake up the sector, Abdullah announced that lease agreements for hotels in several key locations—Jammu, Katra, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Srinagar, and Gulmarg—will soon be reviewed. He criticized what he called the “selective leakage” of government directives, suggesting that only certain communications were reaching the public and opposition.

His frustration was particularly pronounced around the proposed tourism promotion trip to Paris, noting that he and his advisor, Nasir Aslam Wani, wouldn’t attend. Instead, he affirmed that state representation would come from officials and travel associations.

The Future of Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir

Experts argue that sustained efforts are essential for the revitalization of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. According to tourism analyst Rajesh Kumar, “For the industry to flourish, unity and active participation from all stakeholders are essential. Public and private collaboration can create a more attractive destination.”

As Abdullah continues to rally support, he aims to establish a more cohesive strategy whereby tourism stakeholders take an active role in both defending and promoting the region’s tourism initiatives.

This call to action comes at a critical time for tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. The region has historically depended on this industry for economic stability, and a collective effort may indeed be the key to restoring its potential.
