Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated on Sunday that peace is essential for the development of tourism and sports sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to reporters, Abdullah emphasized that without peace, efforts to attract tourists and organize sports events would falter.
“For development, be it in tourism or sports, we need peace. If we speak about hosting matches at night, who will come if the situation is not conducive?” Abdullah explained, underscoring the direct link between stability and growth.
On this occasion, he launched the much-anticipated jersey of Real Kashmir Football Club, symbolizing a commitment to peace and community unity. “The message of today’s program, as well as the jersey, embodies peace,” he stated, reinforcing the role of sports in promoting harmony.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had echoed these sentiments on Saturday, remarking that peace remains a prerequisite for further development in Jammu and Kashmir. He also mentioned that remnants of terrorism still affect the Union Territory.
Abdullah clarified that while his government aims for peace, responsibility does not solely lie with him. “Those who are accountable must fulfill their duties,” he said, addressing the challenges faced by his administration concerning law and order.
He pointed out the irony in how his government faces criticism for events beyond its control. “We are targeted for everything that occurs in Jammu and Kashmir, even the law and order situation, which is not within our domain,” he remarked.
Focusing on infrastructure development, Abdullah assured that his government prioritizes sports initiatives. “Our administration is constructing sports facilities across the region based on youth interests in each assembly segment,” he stated, painting a hopeful picture for aspiring athletes.
Upcoming events highlight this commitment, as Abdullah announced the second edition of the Kashmir marathon scheduled for November 2. “I invite athletes nationwide, especially those ready for a half-marathon, to join us in Srinagar. Let’s run together on November 2,” he encouraged.
Responding to a query about the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, which suffered damages from landslides during recent rains, Abdullah provided an update: “We are yet to complete black-topping on the 300-meter stretch that washed away. We will address this soon, ensuring smooth vehicle movement.”
In a ceremonial unveiling held at TRC Ground, Abdullah presented the special edition “Peace Jersey” created in partnership with Danish sportswear brand Hummel. Officials revealed that the jersey design reflects Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage and hopes for the future.
Inspired by the historic Hari Parbat Fort, which represents communal harmony, the jersey features a sky-blue base symbolizing peace. Abdullah asserted that Real Kashmir FC demonstrates how football can inspire collaboration and unity among various communities.
“Sports serve as a vital bridge for peace,” he added, reiterating the transformative power of sports not just in Kashmir but across regions facing conflict.
