External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for renewed solidarity among Global South nations, emphasizing the need for collective action to reform the United Nations and other global institutions. He made these significant remarks during a High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South countries on Tuesday, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Jaishankar elaborated on the rising global challenges, stating on X that against a backdrop of growing multipolarity and numerous risks, “it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.” His statements underscore an urgent need for collaboration to address issues affecting developing countries.
The minister presented a structured approach during the meeting, highlighting five key proposals aimed at amplifying the collective voice and influence of developing nations. He stressed the importance of utilizing existing forums to foster greater consultations among the Global South, with the aim to “enhance solidarity and encourage collaboration.”
Furthermore, Jaishankar called for comprehensive reforms of the UN to ensure that it is more reflective of the current global landscape and needs. He argued that the Global South must leverage its unique strengths and experiences to positively impact the international stage. Specifically, he cited vaccine distribution, technological capabilities, educational frameworks, agricultural practices, and the role of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as pivotal in advancing the interests of developing nations.
In addressing the challenges posed by climate change, the minister emphasized the necessity for initiatives driven by the Global South. “We must formulate strategies that not only represent our interests but also allow us to take the lead instead of conforming to the narratives dominated by the Global North,” he stressed.
Jaishankar also highlighted the growing importance of discussions surrounding emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. He urged Global South countries to engage in these discussions to ensure that they do not fall behind in the rapidly evolving global order.
India has consistently taken a proactive stance in advocating for the needs and perspectives of the Global South within international forums, pushing for reforms that empower developing nations to shape global agendas effectively. As the country takes on this leadership role, it signifies its commitment towards fostering an inclusive and multilateral global framework.
In conclusion, Jaishankar’s call to action resonates as a reminder of the imperative for Global South solidarity. As nations navigate complex challenges, his proposals present a pathway towards a unified, reformed, and equitable international landscape.
