Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, accusing him of betraying the people of Ladakh following the tragic police firing that resulted in the deaths of four protesters, including a Kargil war veteran, Tsewang Tharchin. In a powerful statement, Gandhi urged for an impartial judicial investigation into this incident, emphasizing the need for accountability.
On Wednesday, during the violent protests demanding statehood for Ladakh, four individuals lost their lives in police firing, igniting outrage across the region. Among the deceased, Tsewang Tharchin, hailed for his valor during the Kargil conflict, became a poignant symbol for those advocating for the rights of Ladakhis.
Sharing a heartfelt video on social media platform X, Gandhi highlighted the tragic irony faced by Tharchin’s family. He emphasized, “Father in the army, son in the army – patriotism runs in their blood. Yet the BJP government shot and killed this brave son of the nation simply because he stood up for Ladakh and his rights.”
His post captured the emotional turmoil surrounding the tragedy and underscored the callousness perceived in the handling of the protests. Gandhi questioned, “Is this the reward for serving the nation today?” as he demanded a thorough investigation.
Notably, the Congress party expressed its outrage following the incident. General Secretary Jairam Ramesh described Tharchin’s killing alongside three others as “a matter of deep anguish.” He pointed out Tharchin’s distinguished military service, having fought at the Siachen Glacier and during the Kargil War.
“Tsewang Tharchin was peacefully protesting for Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh,” Ramesh explained, signifying the broader demand for rights and recognition among the region’s citizens.
Amid these escalating tensions, the protests on September 24 turned violent, prompting protestors to set fire to a local BJP office and engage in stone-pelting against police and CRPF personnel. The fatalities catalyzed widespread condemnation and unrest in the region.
Meanwhile, the police presence remained heightened, with additional crackdown measures implemented to maintain order following the disturbances. On September 26, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk received national attention when he was detained under the National Security Act and subsequently held in a Jodhpur jail, reflecting the contentious atmosphere surrounding the protests.
Prime Minister Modi, facing allegations of neglecting Ladakh’s demands, finds himself on the defensive as calls for transparency grow louder. Gandhi’s remarks highlight a growing discontent rooted in the community’s desire for greater autonomy and recognition.
