Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on its centenary celebrations by honoring its contributions to nation-building in India. The event occurred on Wednesday in New Delhi, highlighting the organization’s steadfast commitment to the principle of ‘nation first’ amid numerous adversities over the years.
In his speech, Modi emphasized the RSS’s role in fostering national unity and removing divisions based on caste and creed. He noted, “The Sangh has fought against British atrocities, provided refuge to freedom fighters, and its founder, Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, faced imprisonment several times during the freedom struggle.”
He acknowledged that the RSS has faced bans and numerous challenges throughout its history but maintained a philosophy of resilience and forgiveness. Citing the wisdom of former RSS chief Madhav Golwalkar, he said, “At times, the tongue may get caught under the teeth, but we do not break the teeth.”
Modi highlighted the value of the RSS’s faith in democracy during challenging times, specifically mentioning its steadfastness during the Emergency. “The two core values – oneness with society and faith in constitutional institutions – have kept swayamsevaks composed in every crisis,” he stated.
Marking this significant historical occasion, PM Modi launched a special ₹100 commemorative coin and a postal stamp dedicated to the RSS. The coin features the national emblem on one side and, for the first time since India’s independence, depicts Bharat Mata in Varada Mudra, accompanied by a lion and swayamsevaks paying homage. The postal stamp commemorates RSS’s participation in the 1963 Republic Day Parade.
“This is a moment of great pride as Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency for the first time,” Modi remarked, expressing his elation at this unique representation of national pride.
Referring to the organization’s continuous selfless service, the Prime Minister recalled the RSS’s efforts during critical moments, including the 1962 war, the 1971 refugee crisis, and the 1984 riots. He reinforced the RSS’s dedication to equality and compassion, praising Mohan Bhagwat’s recent advocacy for unity through his call for “one well, one temple, one cremation ground.”
In response to Modi’s remarks, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale expressed gratitude for the recognition bestowed upon the organization. He termed the commemorative coin and stamp as a tribute to the undying commitment of swayamsevaks since 1925.
The centenary celebrations of the RSS draw attention to its historical significance and active role in shaping modern India, reinforcing its message of unity and nationalism while focusing on its future endeavors to promote harmony across the nation.
