India Upgrades Kabul Mission to Embassy, Enhances Diplomacy

India has elevated its technical mission in Kabul to the status of a full-fledged embassy, marking a significant milestone in diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan. This announcement occurred during a meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi on Friday.

Since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, India withdrew its officials from the Kabul embassy but re-deployed a technical team in June 2022 to maintain limited operations. The latest upgrade aims to enhance cooperation with Afghanistan focusing on humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security.

“Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan,” stated Jaishankar in his opening remarks. He emphasized India’s deep interest in Afghanistan’s growth and stability as a contiguous neighbour committed to the welfare of the Afghan people.

Jaishankar noted that India’s long-standing partnership with Afghanistan remains renewed with focus on critical projects. He acknowledged the Taliban for its “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns,” especially following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

Both nations recognize the shared commitment to growth, stability, and prosperity while addressing cross-border terrorism. “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” Jaishankar asserted, highlighting the importance of unity against this common threat.

In his remarks, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi described India as a pivotal regional ally that has consistently supported Afghan people. He expressed gratitude for India’s humanitarian assistance and reiterated Kabul’s intent to bolster cooperation in areas like trade, infrastructure, and education.

The upgrade of India’s diplomatic mission signifies New Delhi’s careful but strategic re-engagement with the Taliban government, primarily driven by concerns regarding security and regional stability alongside established ties with the Afghan populace. India’s approach showcases diplomatic resilience and commitment to a peaceful future for Afghanistan.
