Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu Awarded Vir Chakra for Gallantry

Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu received the prestigious Vir Chakra for gallantry, honouring his exceptional courage during Operation Sindoor, which took place in May. His remarkable actions during this operation have solidified his status as a heroic leader within the IAF.

According to the official citation published in the Government Gazette dated October 4, Sidhu “flew multiple deep-penetration strike missions to destroy designated targets with surgical precision” while facing “complex threat scenarios and layered air defences.” This description underscores the high stakes of his missions and the critical nature of his achievements.

During a four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan, his squadron employed advanced fighter aircraft and conducted successful missions deep within hostile airspace, achieving all assigned objectives. Sidhu’s leadership proved invaluable as he navigated the challenges posed by enemy defences.

The citation further notes, “As the Commanding Officer, Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu exhibited exceptional acts of gallantry, resolute leadership and unwavering dedication to duty in a high-stakes combat environment, disregarding personal safety.” His commitment to his team and mission ensured the safety and success of his fellow airmen.

Sidhu’s operational strategy included planning and executing missions from three different locations along the Western sector. He led these critical operations while making “dynamic, real-time decisions” to address evolving threats effectively. His tactical brilliance and bold leadership significantly contributed to mission success.

The document states that under his command, the IAF achieved an “enhanced offensive posture,” marking a decisive edge during these crucial operations, reaffirming the effectiveness of his leadership. Such success not only reflects on Sidhu but also on the capabilities of the entire IAF team.

In total, nine IAF pilots who participated in precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure during Operation Sindoor received the Vir Chakra, the nation’s third-highest wartime gallantry award. These operations launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack demonstrate the IAF’s commitment to national security and its resolve to combat terrorism.

Other recipients of this distinction include Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra. Group Captain Arora’s citation praised him for “dynamic leadership and courage” as he executed an unescorted strike mission through heavily defended airspace, achieving pinpoint accuracy despite enemy radar and missile threats.

In addition, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik received recognition for “resolute valour” and “audacious manoeuvring” that created tactical confusion within enemy formations, showcasing bravery and tactical acumen in high-pressure situations.

President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, demonstrating the nation’s appreciation for its armed forces and their commitment to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.
