Priyanka Gandhi Slams EC’s Special Revision of Voter Lists in Kerala

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra voiced strong opposition on Wednesday against the Election Commission (EC)’s proposed Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Kerala. During her two-day visit to her Wayanad constituency, she criticized the Commission for potentially manipulating electoral rolls.

Priyanka, speaking to reporters, emphasized that the Congress party stands firmly against the SIR process, stating, “The Election Commission is planning to carry out SIR in many states, including Kerala, and we will strongly oppose it.” She referred to previous incidents where the SIR had been implemented, particularly in Bihar, expressing deep concerns about its implications for fair elections.

Priyanka described the move as “the only way of committing fraud and cheating in the election,” asserting that the procedure undermines democratic integrity. “We have seen what they did in Bihar, and if this pattern continues in every state, then it poses a significant threat to democracy,” she added.

During her visit, Priyanka also inaugurated the newly built Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Government Ayurveda Dispensary in Ernad, Malappuram district. This inauguration is part of her agenda to promote developmental projects within her constituency, as reported by party sources.

Priyanka arrived at Karipur airport early in the day and traveled directly to Wayanad, where she is set to partake in various engagements aimed at advancing local development and welfare initiatives. Her visit underscores her commitment to addressing local issues and connecting with constituents.

The Congress party has consistently raised alarms regarding the SIR process, alleging that it allows for manipulation and disenfranchisement of voters. Priyanka’s statements align with the party’s broader strategy to challenge election procedures that they deem undemocratic.

As the political landscape heats up ahead of the next elections, automatic revisions of voter lists have become a point of contention. Many political leaders have expressed reservations about the timing and implementation, with Priyanka Gandhi’s robust stance amplifying the Congres’s critique of the EC.

The outcome of Priyanka’s efforts and her party’s opposition remains to be seen, but her resolve is clear as she vows to mobilize support against what she perceives as an encroachment on democracy. Her participation in local events not only reflects her active engagement in politics but also emphasizes the importance of stakeholders in the electoral process.
