The Congress party sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday for his handling of the rising unemployment crisis in India. The party accused Modi of being “always in election mode,” prioritizing orchestrated speeches over addressing critical national issues. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, highlighted that the current unemployment situation poses a grave concern for millions in the country.
Ramesh unpacked the grim reality faced by the public, stating, “Over the past 11 years of misrule, every section of society has felt the adverse impacts.” He underscored that the discontent spans across students, youth, farmers, and workers who increasingly struggle in an economy plagued by inflation and stagnation.
In a pointed post on social media platform X, Ramesh elaborated, “Inflation is skyrocketing, the value of the rupee is continuously falling, and the gap between the rich and poor is widening, making life difficult for poor and middle-class families.” These sentiments reflect a growing frustration among citizens, with rising unemployment overshadowing their daily struggles.
The latest report from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) reveals a startling increase in India’s unemployment rate, which surged to 7.5% in October 2025, marking the highest level in six months. Ramesh remarked, “Millions have lost their jobs across various sectors, including construction and IT banking.” He specifically noted that over 90 lakh jobs have vanished in the construction industry alone, while the salaried job market has contracted by 25 lakh.
Ramesh further emphasized that these alarming statistics have emerged consistently over the last eleven years, yet the government has not responded decisively. He directly targeted the Prime Minister, suggesting that Modi shows a lack of concern for the youth, saying, “He is consumed with crafting new speeches and narratives rather than tackling the unemployment crisis head-on.”
The Congress party’s critique extends beyond unemployment, highlighting broader economic challenges facing the nation. Ramesh stressed that rising prices, declining private investment, and stagnating wages threaten the livelihoods of ordinary citizens. He asserted that now is the time for the government to implement real economic reforms and job creation initiatives, rather than remain fixated on political rhetoric and propaganda.
The Congress continues to face Modi’s government with pointed questions about its economic policies, arguing that voters demand tangible solutions to pressing economic issues. As unemployed youths and workers increasingly voice their frustrations, the call for government accountability grows louder.
As 2024 elections loom closer, the Congress party’s statements may resonate with citizens struggling amidst rising unemployment. With Modi’s administration often viewed as neglecting urgent job creation, it remains to be seen how both the government and opposition will navigate this challenging economic landscape.
