Omar Abdullah Allocates ₹30.14 Crore for Welfare Schemes

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also chairs the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB), has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for the direct online transfer to eligible beneficiaries under various welfare schemes. This significant allocation aims to support the welfare of registered construction workers across Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials confirmed that the sanctioned amount will reach all Assistant Labour Commissioners in the region for immediate transfer into the bank accounts of registered construction workers. This initiative serves as a crucial step in promoting financial security among labourers, especially in these challenging times.

The Labour Department explained that the assistance covers a variety of flagship welfare schemes, ensuring that diverse needs are met. These include education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illness, support for the next of kin of deceased workers, marriage assistance, and meritorious awards for children of registered workers.

During the 22nd meeting of the JKBOCWWB held in July, the Chief Minister emphasized the urgent need for a broader definition of ‘construction worker.’ This approach ensures that all vulnerable labourers within the unorganised sector can benefit from these essential welfare measures.

CM Abdullah reiterated the government’s commitment to implementing innovative policy mechanisms that expand coverage, promote financial security for workers, and align the Board’s operations with national best practices in labour welfare. “Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” he stated passionately while focusing on safeguarding the rights and dignity of the labour force.

In a somber note, the Chief Minister also expressed his grief over a tragic bus accident involving Indian Umrah pilgrims in Medina, Saudi Arabia, that occurred early this morning. He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.

Initial reports indicate that a bus carrying 46 Indian pilgrims collided with a tanker while traveling from Mecca to Medina. The tragic incident reportedly resulted in the death of 45 pilgrims, with only one survivor sustaining serious injuries. The Chief Minister’s reaction highlights the community’s deep-rooted compassion and support for families affected by such unfortunate events.
