Jammu’s Inclusive Development Under Omar Abdullah’s Leadership

On Tuesday, Dr Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister and National Conference president, declared that Jammu is on a path of inclusive and sustainable development under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Speaking during a delegation meeting, he emphasized that the current government breathes life into previously hollow promises.

Dr Abdullah noted that the government has restored citizens’ faith in democracy, actively involving them in governance. He remarked that the elected government has opened the corridors of power for the common man, fostering an environment of trust.

The delegation, which interacted with Dr Abdullah, raised numerous long-standing public issues that accumulated over the past decade due to what they termed the mismanagement of the BJP. They expressed gratitude for the corrective measures initiated by the Omar Abdullah-led government, which reversed challenges long faced by Jammu city.

In addressing party affairs, Dr Abdullah assured the delegation that the National Conference is deeply aware of the difficulties citizens encountered during years of undemocratic rule. “The Omar Abdullah-led government is making significant advances in restoring public faith in democratic institutions,” he emphasized.

While discussing the much-anticipated Smart City project, Dr Abdullah pointed out that recent rainfall exposed its shortcomings, demonstrating the need for accountability in government initiatives. He voiced concerns over the project’s effectiveness in true urban development.

Dr Abdullah highlighted several key initiatives by the current government, including the preservation of the historic Mubarak Mandi heritage complex, which had languished in neglect. He noted the introduction of free transport for women, increased ration quotas for low-income families, and the revival of the Darbar Move, all of which have rejuvenated local economies.

Continuing his address, he mentioned ongoing and upcoming projects, such as developing ropeways and riversides, as essential for placing Jammu firmly on the national tourism map, ultimately enhancing economic growth and job creation.

Dr Abdullah also urged party members to prepare vigorously for upcoming Urban Local Body and Panchayat elections. Strengthening public outreach remains a focus, with an emphasis on representing youth and women to align governance with their expectations.

On the same day, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met with Gujjar institutions, urging them to engage in scientific studies that examine climate change’s impact on the Gujjar-Bakerwal community. He believes these studies will inform better policy-making in the future.

Addressing a gathering at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust in Jammu, Abdullah commemorated the third death anniversary of Dr Masud Ahmed Choudhary, a notable educationist and former Vice-Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University. “There is no shortage of talent in Gujjar institutions. Channeling this talent into climate change research will empower the community,” Abdullah stated, recognizing the unique vulnerabilities faced by the nomadic Gujjar-Bakerwal people.

Abdullah underscored the importance of enhancing educational infrastructure by supporting Gujjar hostels, schools, and mobile educational facilities. He stressed the necessity for an in-depth analysis of the effectiveness of reservation policies. “We have discussed reservation for years, but serious evaluations of its real benefits remain absent,” he commented.

Former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah reiterated the significance of unity within the community, urging a strong focus on education. He affirmed that education is vital for securing a better future for upcoming generations.

The gathering also featured several Ministers, MLAs, former Ministers, senior advocates, civil society members, and community representatives, highlighting a collective effort towards inclusive development in Jammu.
