A Jammu and Kashmir Police constable faces arrest linked to the tragic killing of a Gujjar youth on July 24 in a shooting incident near Sure Chak village. This arrest brings hope for justice to the family and community affected by this incident.
Mohammad Parvez, a 21-year-old from Niki Tawi, suffered untimely death when police allegedly shot him during a reported shootout. Officials confirmed the investigation and subsequent arrest of selection grade constable Pawan Singh.
The incident ignited widespread protests from the Gujjar community, who disputed police claims of Parvez being a drug peddler, insisting he fell victim to a “fake encounter.” In response to the strong public outcry, police established a special investigation team (SIT) and launched a magisterial probe.
The political backlash was equally significant. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti condemned the killing, calling for accountability and transparency in the investigation. Both leaders visited the grieving family to express their support.
Following the SIT’s findings, Singh faced formal charges under section 105 of the BNS, which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The police also suspended Singh and head constable Baljinder Singh pending the investigation.
“The arrest of Pawan Singh in connection with the tragic death of Parvez is a crucial step toward justice,” stated Mufti. “It serves as a reminder of the necessary accountability within police forces, reinforcing that no individual is above the law.”
Mufti emphasized that Parvez’s loss remains irreparable, but this significant development provides a glimmer of hope for justice. “The investigation conducted under SSP Jammu, Joginder Singh, deserves commendation, highlighting a fair and transparent approach that must restore faith in our systems,” she added.
Experts believe that this incident raises broader questions about police conduct and accountability in Jammu and Kashmir. The local community has voiced concerns regarding police actions and the urgent need for reform.
This tragic incident underscores the complexities of law enforcement in Jammu and Kashmir, a region often marred by violence and unrest. People are now calling for more robust measures to ensure that police actions are within the bounds of law.
As the judicial process unfolds, observers and community leaders alike hope for a thorough examination of events surrounding Mohammad Parvez’s death. Many anticipate that accountability will not only serve the memory of Parvez but also foster a sense of security and trust within the public regarding their law enforcement agencies.
