CJI DY Chandrachud Recommends Justice Sanjiv Khanna as His Successor in Letter to Centre

New Delhi, Oct 17: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has formally recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor, nominating him to become the next Chief Justice of India. CJI Chandrachud made the recommendation in a letter to the Central government, naming Justice Khanna, the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court after him.

CJI Chandrachud is scheduled to retire on November 10, 2023. Following his retirement, Justice Khanna is expected to take over as CJI, with a tenure lasting until May 13, 2025, when he will reach the retirement age.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who started his legal career in 1983, has expertise in taxation, arbitration, commercial, and environmental law. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and became a permanent judge in 2006. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.
