In a significant achievement for neonatal care, the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth. This remarkable case, occurring on October 25, 2025, stands out as one of the heaviest babies delivered at this institution.
The baby was born to a diabetic mother at 1:20 PM and immediately faced severe respiratory distress within just 30 minutes of life. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, medical staff promptly admitted the newborn to the NICU for advanced management and continuous monitoring.
Due to the infant’s large-for-gestational-age status, the team initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support. The healthcare providers closely observed respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, body temperature, and neurological activity to ensure a comprehensive approach to care.
Positive responses from the baby allowed for a gradual reduction of respiratory support over the following days. For the final 72 hours leading to discharge, the newborn exhibited stable independent breathing and normal oxygenation, without alarming episodes of apnea or cyanosis.
After demonstrating sustained clinical stability, the baby was discharged in a healthy condition, with routine follow-up care recommended. This case underscores the effectiveness and dedication of the medical team involved.
Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics, led the management efforts, supported by esteemed faculty members including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. Their leadership, combined with the diligence of senior and junior residents, played a crucial role in the successful outcome.
Acknowledgment is due to the nursing and paramedical staff of GMC Doda for their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care. Their unwavering commitment was instrumental in the baby’s recovery.
This notable achievement reflects the growing expertise and teamwork within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. It highlights the institution’s ongoing commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region.
