In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth, making it one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution. The baby, born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM, faced immediate medical challenges due to the conditions surrounding its birth.
The infant entered the world through a diabetic mother and developed severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes. Recognizing the urgent situation, the medical team swiftly admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced clinical management and monitoring. This proactive approach highlights GMC Doda’s commitment to neonatal care, which is increasingly crucial in the region.
Given the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and signs of respiratory compromise, specialized neonatal respiratory support was initiated promptly. Medical professionals closely monitored the newborn’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Over the following days, the baby showed a positive response to treatment, enabling healthcare providers to gradually reduce respiratory support.
During the final 72 hours leading up to discharge, the infant maintained stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation, demonstrating no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. After achieving sustained clinical stability, the child was discharged in a healthy condition, with routine follow-up care recommended.
This successful management occurred under the expert guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of the Pediatrics Department, and involved a dedicated team of faculty members including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma, along with committed senior and junior residents.
Special acknowledgment is due to the vigilant nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda, whose compassionate care and unwavering commitment were crucial to the baby’s recovery. Their roles underline the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in neonatal care, showcasing how collective efforts lead to successful patient outcomes.
This achievement exemplifies the growing neonatal expertise and teamwork within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. It reflects the institution’s enduring commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care for newborns and children in the region, further highlighting the advancements in healthcare services offered locally.
