SRINAGAR, Oct 26: A senior police official has confirmed that three to four militants are believed to be behind the deadly attack on an Army convoy in the Gulmarg sector of Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two soldiers. The search operation, now in its second day, resumed Saturday morning after being halted the previous night.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Mohammad Zaid Malik, evidence gathered at the scene suggests the involvement of 3-4 militants. The ongoing operation, involving police, Army, and paramilitary forces, has expanded to include Baba Reshi and the forested areas surrounding Gulmarg, as well as the built-up regions nearby.
In the days leading up to the attack, security forces conducted multiple input-based operations targeting militants in the Pattan-Kreeri area of Baramulla district. On Thursday, the convoy was ambushed approximately 6 km from the popular tourist destination Gulmarg in the Bota Pathri area, with militants opening fire on the Army vehicle en route to the Nagin post in the Affarwat range. The attack resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and two Army porters, while another soldier and a porter sustained injuries.
On Friday, security forces deployed drones and helicopters for an extensive search operation in the area and along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Gulmarg sector. They are utilizing both human and technical intelligence to trace and neutralize the attackers. Senior police and Army officials are overseeing the operation, which is taking place in an area heavily monitored by the Army. There have been reports of a terrorist group infiltrating during early summer and seeking refuge in the higher reaches of the Affarwat range.
