Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections: Enthusiastic Voter Turnout in Phase One

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a remarkable voter turnout of 61.11% in the first phase of the Assembly elections held today for 24 constituencies. Enthusiasm among voters was palpable, with long queues observed at polling stations throughout the day.

All eight Assembly seats in the Doda region reported significant participation. Notably, Paddar-Nagseni and Inderwal constituencies in Kishtwar district recorded over 80% polling, with Kishtwar district itself achieving the highest turnout of 77%. Doda district followed with 69.33%, while Ramban district reported 67.71%.

District-wise Turnout Breakdown
Kishtwar: 77% (Paddar-Nagseni 80.67%, Inderwal 80.06%)
Doda: 69.33% (Doda West 75.98%)
Ramban: 67.71% (Banihal 71.28%)
In comparison to the 2014 Assembly elections, the turnout figures show a slight decrease in some areas. However, the participation of voters amidst security concerns highlights a strong commitment to democratic processes.

Peaceful Voting Amidst Tensions
Despite the presence of foreign terrorists in the region, voters turned out in large numbers, even in areas like Chatroo in Kishtwar, where two Army soldiers were martyred last week. The Chief Electoral Officer, PK Pole, confirmed that the elections concluded peacefully, with only minor scuffles reported.

“Turnout of approximately 59% is the highest in the past seven elections,” said Pole. He attributed this increase to improved security, active political engagement, and effective voter education campaigns.

Election Security and Incidents
The polling phase was secured by tight arrangements, ensuring that the electoral process proceeded smoothly. A minor incident occurred at the Bagwan polling station, where clashes between BJP and PDP activists led to a temporary suspension of voting. An inquiry into the matter has been initiated to assess the situation.

Political Leaders Encourage Participation
Political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urged citizens to exercise their right to vote, emphasizing the importance of democratic participation. Local candidates expressed optimism about the elections, with BJP candidate Shagun Parihar confidently asserting that the party would emerge victorious.

Looking Ahead
With two more phases of elections scheduled for September 25 and October 1, officials are hopeful for continued high turnout. The recent phase has set a positive tone, reinforcing the importance of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir.

As voters prepare for the upcoming phases, leaders across the political spectrum are rallying support, reminding citizens of the significance of their votes in shaping the future of the region.

Conclusion
The first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections marks a significant step in the region’s democratic journey post-Article 370 abrogation. With a blend of enthusiasm, security, and political engagement, the people of Jammu and Kashmir are actively participating in what has been described as a “festival of democracy.”
