In a significant upheaval within the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), Sunil Sethi, a member of the Sub-Committee for Legal Affairs, has resigned, raising serious allegations regarding the issuance of “back-dated orders” by the former Ombudsman. Sethi, who served on the Sub-Committee since 2021, communicated his decision through a letter addressed to BCCI President Mithun Manhas.
Sethi’s resignation occurs in the aftermath of a crucial Supreme Court directive on 27 October, mandating that JKCA hold its elections within 12 weeks under the oversight of former Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Joti.
Expounding on the reasons for his resignation, Sethi remarked, “The Supreme Court has directed the holding of elections within a specified period, and efforts to appoint a new Ombudsman have faced delays. Unfortunately, back-dated orders are being issued by the former Ombudsman, with dates misleadingly set back to March 2025, despite no such orders having been communicated to me.”
His alarming disclosure suggests that these directives manipulate club management and voting rights. He expressed concern, stating, “These orders are altering the management structure and voting nomenclature within the JKCA, a situation I do not wish to endorse or participate in.”
Sethi concluded his resignation letter with a formal statement, saying, “Hence, I tender my resignation from the Member Sub-Committee. I request you to accept my resignation and relieve me of my duties. I am grateful for the opportunity the Board has provided me during my tenure.”
Given the ongoing turmoil within JKCA, Sethi’s resignation marks a pivotal moment. The JKCA currently navigates a series of legal challenges following the Supreme Court’s order, which demands timely elections to restore credibility and governance within the association.
These events unfold against a backdrop of increasing scrutiny over the administration of cricket governance in Jammu and Kashmir. Observers of the sport note that the association’s integrity must be upheld to foster a healthy cricketing environment. With the Supreme Court’s timeline pressing the JKCA, officials must ensure that the elections occur promptly and transparently.
The resignation of a significant figure like Sunil Sethi could further ignite discussions on governance issues within the JKCA. As the cricketing community awaits updates, all eyes turn to the BCCI and local cricket bodies for clarity and action regarding the governance crisis.
