JKPCC Chief Demands Judicial Probe into Leh Violence Incident

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President Tariq Hameed Karra on Thursday called for an impartial judicial inquiry into the Leh violence of September 24, which resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals. He stressed that the investigation should take place under the supervision of a sitting High Court judge, or if that is not feasible, a retired judge of high integrity.

Karra expressed his concerns during a press interaction, stating: “Whatever happened in Leh should not be repeated. There must be a thorough inquiry. If a sitting High Court judge is not available on a fast track, the probe should be given to a reputable retired judge.”

The demand for a judicial probe comes in the wake of heightened tensions in the region. Many residents and political figures believe that an independent inquiry could help unravel the truths surrounding the violent incident.

Earlier in the day, Karra paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries, highlighting their enduring legacy of leadership and dedication to a self-reliant India. He stated that Gandhian philosophy continues to inspire not only India but also resonates globally, as evidenced by its recognition at the United Nations.

Discussing the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, Karra remarked that all strategic decisions, including seat sharing and potential alliances, would be managed by the Congress leadership at the central level. He mentioned that senior leader Digvijay Singh has been appointed as the observer for this critical political exercise.

On the matter of Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, Karra advocated for his participation in the ongoing Assembly sessions. He pointed out, “Even Engineer Rashid was allowed to participate in Parliament while lodged in Tihar Jail. By the same logic, Mehraj Malik should also be allowed to join.” This statement underscores Karra’s belief in the importance of democratic principles, even for those with legal challenges.

The JKPCC President’s statements reflect broader concerns regarding governance and accountability in the region amidst the ongoing political developments. As the situation unfolds, residents and political analysts alike continue to watch how these developments will impact the future of governance in Jammu and Kashmir.
