LOK SABHA SPEAKER REPRIMANDS MEMBERS OVER DIGNITY OF HOUSE

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla issued a stern reminder on Thursday urging members to uphold respect and avoid remarks that could tarnish the dignity of the House. His remarks came in response to protests from opposition members regarding expunged comments made by BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay during the Union Budget discussion on Wednesday.

Speaker Birla emphasized the significance of parliamentary traditions and the need for members to express their views while maintaining decorum. “Members can participate in discussions but must ensure that their conduct does not undermine the dignity of the House,” Birla stated during the session.

He further noted that the concerned member had been cautioned against making similar remarks in the future, highlighting the Speaker’s authority to uphold parliamentary standards.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju echoed Birla’s sentiments, stressing that remarks diminishing the House’s dignity should be avoided by all members, regardless of their political affiliations. “It is imperative to uphold the sanctity of parliamentary proceedings,” Rijiju affirmed, underscoring the Speaker’s prerogative to take appropriate actions as necessary.

The incident underscores ongoing efforts to maintain decorum and respect within India’s legislative bodies, ensuring constructive and dignified debates during crucial sessions.
