New Delhi, Jul 24: The Delhi Police have launched an investigation into the tragic death of a 26-year-old civil services aspirant, Nilesh Rai, who died due to electrocution in Patel Nagar, two days ago. Officials are currently examining CCTV footage and collaborating with power distribution companies to ascertain the events leading to the incident.
According to a Tata Power Discom official, the incident was caused by an unfortunate electric current leakage from damaged motor wiring belonging to a customer. The wiring had inadvertently come into contact with an iron gate, resulting in the fatal electrocution of Nilesh Rai.
Based on preliminary findings from CCTV footage, authorities reported that Rai, a resident of Ghazipur, slipped on a waterlogged street while returning to his PG accommodation from a nearby library. In an attempt to regain his balance, Rai grasped the iron gate, which was charged due to the electric current leak, leading to his electrocution.
“We are in contact with power distribution companies and reviewing CCTV footage to piece together the sequence of events,” stated a senior police officer, adding that Tata Power Discom will also be questioned in connection with the incident.
In response to the tragedy, a Tata Power Discom spokesperson expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and underscored their commitment to ensuring public safety during the monsoon season. They emphasized the importance of electrical safety measures, urging the public to avoid waterlogged areas, steer clear of fallen wires, and promptly report any electrical hazards.
After conducting an autopsy, Rai’s body was handed over to his family members. An FIR has been registered under sections 106(1) (causing death by rash and negligent act) and 285 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as confirmed by the police.
The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the hazards posed by electrical infrastructure during adverse weather conditions, prompting renewed calls for vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines.
