RIJIJU CRITICIZES OPPOSITION FOR ‘INSULTING’ BUDGET DEBATE

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju slammed opposition leaders on Thursday, accusing them of resorting to personal attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead of engaging in substantive discussions on the Union Budget in Parliament.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Rijiju expressed disappointment over the conduct of some opposition members during the ongoing budget session, labeling their speeches as disrespectful to the parliamentary process and undermining the session’s dignity.

“The manner in which some opposition leaders made their speeches amounted to insulting the House and lowering the dignity of the Budget session,” Rijiju told reporters.

Referring to the mandate given by the people in the recent elections, where Prime Minister Modi secured a third consecutive term, Rijiju emphasized respecting the democratic verdict. He warned that any attempt to disrespect the people’s mandate would have consequences in future elections.

His remarks came in response to opposition allegations that the Union Budget for 2024-25 favored NDA-ruled states, with accusations of preferential treatment towards coalition partners like JD-U and TDP.

“Elections are over. Now is the time to focus on building a developed India (Viksit Bharat) and engage in constructive discussions on the Union Budget,” Rijiju asserted, echoing the Prime Minister’s call to rise above political divisions for national progress.

Highlighting the need for civil and respectful debate in Parliament, Rijiju urged opposition leaders to refrain from creating disruptions and instead foster an environment conducive to productive dialogue.

“The floor leaders of political parties should ensure that members maintain decorum and contribute constructively during the Budget session,” Rijiju concluded.
