RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Advocates ‘Vyakti Nirman’ at Centenary Event

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed an audience of swayamsevaks on Thursday at the annual Vijayadashami function in Nagpur, marking the significant centenary of the organization. Bhagwat emphasized the importance of ‘vyakti nirman’ (character building) as the guiding principle of the RSS, which has steadfastly resisted numerous temptations to enter politics over its 100-year history.

In his speech, Bhagwat aimed to share the insights garnered from the RSS’s century-long journey, illustrating its commitment to social transformation through integrity and selflessness. He pointed out that reforms in global structures must occur gradually to avert destruction, asserting that “India must present a development model based on a holistic and integrated outlook, rooted in dharma, and offer it to the world.”

Defining the essence of dharma, Bhagwat clarified that it transcends mere rituals or worship; instead, it represents the fundamental principles that weave society together. He stated that RSS strives to exemplify these values through its numerous shakhas, fostering social leadership among its members.

Addressing the allure of political engagement, Bhagwat remarked, “Over the last 100 years, the RSS has been offered temptations and even invited to enter politics. But the Sangh has focused only on running shakhas and character-building.” He championed vyakti nirman as the essential pathway to sustainable societal progress, a belief born from the collective experiences of swayamsevaks.

In a country famed for its diverse languages, faiths, and lifestyles, Bhagwat highlighted the significance of viewing this plurality as a strength. He asserted, “All communities, including those who adopted foreign religions, are part of the larger Indian identity,” underscoring the need for harmony, mutual respect, and a firm stance against violence.

Moreover, Bhagwat condemned the rise of hooliganism and attempts to disrupt communal harmony. He urged law enforcement agencies to act impartially and encouraged society—especially the youth—to stay vigilant and organized, stepping in when necessary to protect peace and order.

The RSS chief’s insistence on character building as a foundational element reflects a broader vision for India’s future. He articulated a call for collective responsibility in nurturing social cohesiveness that respects and celebrates diversity, asserting that true strength lies in unity.

As the RSS commemorates its centenary, Bhagwat’s focus remains on fulfilling its long-standing commitment to character development and social service, reinforcing the notion that integrity and harmony are essential for India’s progress. His statements resonate widely as India navigates its complex socio-political landscape, seeking paths toward inclusive development and national unity.
