Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the abrogation of Abrogation of Article 370 fulfilled the long-cherished dream of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, asserting that his ideology and principles continue to guide the governance agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party and shape the vision of a “New India.”
Addressing a commemorative programme through a video message on the occasion of Dr. Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary, the Prime Minister described him as a visionary leader, patriot, and champion of national unity.
Modi said the decision to revoke Article 370 in August 2019 was a tribute to Dr. Mookerjee’s lifelong struggle against the concept of “one nation with two constitutions, two heads, and two symbols.” He said the constitutional change fulfilled the ideals for which the Jana Sangh founder had dedicated his life.
Recalling Dr. Mookerjee’s role in national integration, the Prime Minister said he remained committed to the vision of an “Akhand Bharat” and played a significant role during the Partition by mobilising public opinion to ensure that West Bengal remained an integral part of India.
Highlighting the evolution of the Jana Sangh into the BJP, Modi said the ideological movement started by Dr. Mookerjee has grown into the world’s largest democratic political party. He credited generations of Jana Sangh and BJP workers for preserving and strengthening the party’s ideological foundation.
The Prime Minister also praised the West Bengal Government for organising commemorative events in honour of Dr. Mookerjee and said governments committed to a “Nation First” approach ensure that national icons receive due recognition.
He noted that the Centre is observing Dr. Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary as a two-year nationwide commemoration, which began on July 6 last year and will continue until July 6 next year.
Expressing confidence in Dr. Mookerjee’s enduring legacy, Modi said future generations would continue to draw inspiration from his courage, vision, and commitment to national unity.
