On Friday, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made headlines by asserting that the Governor of Tamil Nadu should allow Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to prove his majority in the state assembly. Abdullah argued that denying this opportunity lacks justification and contradicts various Supreme Court judgements.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar had previously dismissed TVK chief Vijay’s claim to form a government, citing insufficient numbers. Currently, the TVK has not reached the simple majority threshold of 118 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, even though Congress has offered its support with five MLAs.
Abdullah emphasized that there is no reason for the imposition of President’s rule in Tamil Nadu. He referred to several Supreme Court rulings, highlighting the precedence of inviting the single largest party to attempt forming a government first, allowing them the chance to prove their majority.
“If we consider the Supreme Court judgement, President’s rule is unwarranted. The court clearly states that after elections, the largest party should be invited to form a government, with the chance to demonstrate their majority on the assembly floor,” Abdullah said during a media interaction.
He cited historical instances, referencing former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee, who formed a government for 13 days without having the numbers guaranteed. “The President did not hesitate to invite him to form the government; he just had to resign when his numbers did not add up,” Abdullah noted, advocating that the Tamil Nadu Lok Bhavan cannot obstruct the democratic process concerning TVK.
Abdullah concluded by reiterating that Vijay should have the opportunity to establish his government. “If he manages to prove his majority, he stays in power; if he does not, then he must resign,” he stated. This perspective presents a significant challenge to the current political landscape in Tamil Nadu, as discussions on governance and democratic processes take center stage.
As the political saga unfolds, the dynamics between the governance systems and party leadership will continue to be scrutinized. Observers will analyze whether the TVK, under Vijay’s leadership, can navigate the complexities of assembly politics and secure the support necessary to govern effectively.
