On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the fearless spirit of voters in West Bengal during the assembly elections, asserting that this represents a crucial transformation after decades of intimidation. He made these remarks while addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Ganga Expressway.
As polling takes place across 142 constituencies, voters are participating in significant numbers, driving home the essence of democracy. Modi noted that May 4 marks an important day in this festival of democracy as the second and final phase of voting commences.
“Reports indicate a massive turnout, with citizens enthusiastically stepping out just as they did in the first phase. Social media is flooded with images of long queues at polling stations, showcasing the public’s desire to exercise their democratic rights,” he stated.
Highlighting the evolving political landscape in West Bengal, Modi said, “What we are witnessing today is unprecedented. For the past six or seven decades, the environment in Bengal did not allow such fearlessness in voting.”
He hailed the strong participation of the electorate as a powerful symbol of the country’s Constitution and democratic resilience. “The great people of Bengal deserve our gratitude for their awareness of their rights and for coming out in large numbers to vote,” he added.
